generate Computer Games - Get Started on Creating Your Own Virtual Worlds

I’ve all the time loved video games, ever since I first played them on a friend’s computer in the afternoon after elementary school. There’s something approximately magical about the fact that we can move images colse to and interact with virtual worlds, a living fantasy presented for us to interact with however we please. I’ve also all the time wanted to make games myself but, until recently, didn’t have the technical knowledge to do so. Now, I’m a second year software engineering student, so if I weren’t able to code a game without too many dramas there’d be something drastically wrong. But what about the tasteless person: the person for whom the term ‘memory leak’ conjures up images of their grandfather, ‘pipeline’ is where the water flows, and ‘blitting’ is unheard of? Well, everyone can get in on the game creation process, and you don’t even need to learn ‘real’ programming to do so.

So where do games start? With an idea. Games, like all fiction, need an idea to be successful. Sure, in the same way you can just sit down and write a story without foresight, you can jump on in and slap a game together. However, unless you get ridiculously lucky, the best works are regularly the ones that have been well plan out beforehand.

There are two methods of planning a project. You can start from a known technological standpoint and build your project on top of that or you can just go for the design, add as many features and ideas as you like, and then remove the ones that you can’t use when you’ve decided on the technology you’re going to implement the game with. In general, the second type is probably the best one to go with when designing games. When you’re first beginning out however, the first selection will save you many headaches.

So, for a first game you’re going to want a pretty easy idea. Don’t get me wrong, crazy-go-nuts game ideas are fantastic, and there should be more of them out there, but you’re not going to be able to generate a real world simulator with fifty billion virtual habitancy all interacting real time with your actions having a butterfly result on the future of the virtual universe when it’s just your first game. Really. Many habitancy try it; none that I know of have succeeded. Imitation is the best way to start out. easy games such as ‘Space Invaders’, ‘Tetris’, ‘Pacman’ or even ‘Pong’ are great places to start. All are largely easy to generate but have some potential challenges. ‘Pacman’ for example, requires path finding for the ghosts. I advise that you start even simpler than that for your very first attempt. ‘Space Invaders’ is a nice point to jump in. You can make a simple, perfect game without much endeavor and it’s approximately infinitely extensible.

If you’re stuck for an idea, pick a genre that you enjoy. Do you love adventure games such as ‘Monkey Island’, ‘Grim Fandango’, ‘Space Quest’, ‘King’s Quest’ etc.? create one of those. Are you into fighting games like ‘Street Fighter’, ‘Tekken’, ‘Soul Calibur’, ‘Mortal Kombat’ and so on? Come up with an idea for that. Do you like first person shooters such as ‘Quake’, ‘Half Life’ or ‘Doom’? I don’t advise it as a first project, but you can all the time give it a go. Feel free to be as generic as you like, this is a studying taste after all.

Now that you have your idea it’s time to flesh it out. Don’t worry about the technology or the fact that you may not know how to truly implement a game just yet, just grab yourself some paper and a pencil and go crazy with ideas. Divulge the main characters, game play, goals, interactions, story, and key mappings, whatever you can think of. Make sure you have adequate detail so that person can read straight through the notes and play straight through the game in their head with relative accuracy. Changing game create during the coding process is approximately all the time a bad idea. Once it’s set, it should remain set until the tweaking phase (I’ll go into this more later) or you’re likely to enter ‘development hell’, where the project goes on and on; more and more work is done with less and less outcome.

At the end of this period of your game creation, you should have the following:

- A written shape of the game’s characters and maybe a sketch or two (be they space ships, yellow circles, cars or the prince of the dark kingdom of Falgour, you need to know who or what the player will be and who they will compete against)

- A written shape of the story (if there is one, this isn’t too vital for ‘Space Invaders’ or ‘Tetris’, but for ‘Uber Quest: An Adventure of Awesomeness’ it’s a truly good idea)

- A record of game play, written or storyboarded. Storyboards are optical representations of ideas. Draw your characters in actions, with arrows showing the flow of operation and short written descriptions detailing the events occurring in your image (because some of us aren’t fabulous artists and our images can be a little… open to interpretation…)

Now that you have a fleshed out idea, it’s time to work out how this will all get put together. If you’ve gotten to this point and are worried that you’re going to have to spend years studying involved programming languages in order to implement your idea, fear not! Others have already done the hard yards for you. There are many Rad (Rapid Application Development) Tools ready for game creation, a estimate of which are ready for free online. Some of them still need you to learn a ‘scripting language’ (a simplified programming language made for a exact task) but in normal this isn’t too involved or involved. I’ve compiled a brief list of some of these I have found at the end of the article. The free ones are listed first, organized by game genre.

Well, that should be adequate to get you started in the creation of your game. The most leading thing to remember once you’ve gotten this far is that you need to perfect your game. Many habitancy start a project and then lose interest and it fails, or they keep interesting on to one new project after another without finishing anything. Start small, build a working (if simple) game that is, above all else, complete. When you get to this stage you will all the time have a huge estimate of things that you wish to change, fix etc. But you’ll get a great feeling from knowing that it is, in its way, finished.

From this point, you can start the tweaking phase. Play your game a few times and ask others to do the same. Take note of what isn’t fun or could be best and turn things here. At this stage, it is more leading than ever to keep backups of former versions so that if a turn doesn’t work you can go back and try something dissimilar without losing any of your work. It is at this point that you can add all new features, enhance graphics and sounds, whatever you please, safe in the knowledge that you’re working on a solid foundation.

When you’re happy with your game, why not share it with the world? There are many cheap or free places out there for you to host your files on and then you can jump on link lists and forums and let everyone know about your creation. Well, I hope that this has been a helpful introduction into the art of creating games. It’s a great deal of fun, and can open whole new avenues of creative expression for you to explore. Computer Memory - Upgrade for High Speed

Computer memory is the soul of your computer. Basically, it is of three types -Ram or the random way memory, Rom or the read only memory, and the hard drive memory. Ram computer memory is used by the computer processor for processing the information. It is a temporary memory, and the occasion computer is shut down, every piece of data in the Ram is lost. It is at this point of time that computer flash memory comes into the picture. Ram is added classified into dissimilar types such as extended data out (Edo); fast page mode (Fpm); singular data rate (Sdr); Synchronous Dynamic Ram (Sdram); double data rate -first generation (Ddr1); and the double data rate -second generation (Ddr2) respectively.

Rom is the memory that is stored on the computer's motherboard. The memory has all the data which is required by the computer for starting it smoothly. Since it is a read only memory, Rom can only be used for reading purposes and not for writing. Hard drive memory on the computer is the memory placed on the physical drive and which can be used for storing huge amounts of data at any given point of time. The data can be in effect recovered from this computer memory after the computer is switched on. Hard drive memory is a computer memory that can be used for longer period of time.

Whether it is Dell or Apple memory or for that matter memory of any other assembled computer system, the central role of the memory remains the same, which is to store high quantity of data and make it ready for use for data purposes. With growth in the resources, the requirement for computer memory upgrade becomes a considerable aspect. Upgrading the memory of computer system is very easy and not a cumbersome task and it takes only few minutes of your time. When you go for upgrade of computer memory, there's enormous growth in the performance of your computer system as it now takes much less processing time.

Computer Memory - Why It's foremost

Many of you have probably asked yourselves this many times. For those of you who are finding to buy or have already purchased a computer may still be asking yourselves what this piece of hardware does for your computer. Buying computer memory is not as simple as going to the store and asking a sales representative for it. Each computer can only support a positive type of memory.

Walk into any computer store and either look at the cute puny fastener they put on the case or just ask the sales representative and they will approximately always let you know exactly how much memory, or Ram, the computer has. Ask them what it means and depending on where you're shopping you may or may not get an answer. Most of the time, the facts is needed to be sent to your hard drive, since your hard drive is where most of your facts is kept. Once the facts gets to your hard drive it then searches for Notepad. All the files needed to run Notepad are sent back to your processor. The processor then sends the files where they need to go to run Notepad.

Now that seems like a long journey to pull up an application as simple as Notepad, doesn't it? This is what makes Ram so wonderful. All those files that are needed to run Notepad can be stored on Ram. When you click on the Notepad icon on your start menu your Ram will certainly send the required files needed to run Notepad rather than the long trip explained above. This alleviates a lot of stress on your computer. Instead of worrying about where the files that are needed are and searching for them, Ram will step up and let your computer know, "Hey, I have those files right here! You can start Notepad now!"

If you have ever seen a stick of Ram you may have noticed that it looks a lot like puny black squares attached to the greenish colored circuit board. These puny black squares are where the facts is stored.

Ram does this for beginning and running all applications on your computer. The most leading thing you must remember when finding at memory is that each application you need to run requires a positive whole of Ram in order for it work correctly. The more you have the best off you will be and the faster your computer will run. You have to be cautious though, having too much Ram can cause problems. The problems in general arise because of a aggregate of both hardware and software restrictions. If you have a fairly new computer you could safely get away with running 2Gbs of computer memory. The operating ideas you probably use, Windows Xp, will only support up to 4Gbs. This isn't a lot when you correlate the size to hard drive space. But your computer doesn't need a lot of Ram because the facts that is stored in it is not permanent. It would be approximately impossible for you to run so many applications and work on them all to 'fill up' your Ram with application information. But as technology grows applications will wish more and more Ram to operate. So the whole of Ram that you can safely use will finally increase. Windows Xp 64-bit version already supports up to 16Gbs of Ram and although it hasn't gone retail yet, Windows Vista will also support up to 16Gbs. This will allow for programmers to create a more diverse range of applications to run on your computer.

The basal factor in the benefits of getting Ram is two-fold. It relives stress on your Cpu and can make your computer a lot faster. Now if you upgrade from 512Mb to 1Gb you may not see much of a difference. Going from 512Mb to 2Gb will certainly show you some heavy speed improvements with your computer. always be sure to check with your motherboard documentation before getting Ram for your computer. Each motherboard will only support a positive type of Ram. Don't make the mistake of buying Ram that you can't even use.

Computer Memory - How Much Is Enough?

How much memory should you have in your personal computer? How much is enough? How much is too much? How much is too little?

These are not easy questions to answer. The truth is, memory requirements to run basic programs over the last 20 years have gone up exponentially.

Back in the early stone ages of Pcs your basic computer came with 64K of Ram. This was just about enough to run a uncomplicated basic program. To run any kind of a schedule that did anything useful, and there were very few of those, you had to upgrade to at least 128K and if possible 256K. Back then, circa 1984, this was a lot of memory and came with a hefty price tag of about for each K of memory. So a 256K upgrade cost you about 6. Some places would give you a allowance and you could walk away with your beefed up computer for about 0 in upgrade costs. And still, there was very petite you could do with the darn thing.

The years went by and programs started getting developed that nothing else but did something. uncomplicated spreadsheet programs like Lotus for example. To run these you needed a minimum of 256K of Ram. finally with upgrades to the programs themselves the bottom figure for Ram rose to about 512K. This would run you a top of the line schedule for that time. This was roughly nearby 1988.

Then the 1990's hit and things started to take off. Video games for Pc's started becoming very popular. firm software was nothing else but becoming useful. Programs were getting bigger and so were memory requirements. Programs now required memory in the megabytes instead of kilobytes. The early Dungeons and Dragons video games, which were some of the most popular of the time, required between 4 and 16 meg of Ram to run depending on the game itself. The biggest programs of the day, which nothing else but started to become very beneficial would require 16 to 32 meg to run. Now we were seeing some big numbers.

But memory was still not cheap, though it was a lot less costly than in the 80's. Instead of paying per kilobyte of memory you were paying about for a megabyte of memory. So 32 meg would only cost you about 0 which wasn't too bad.

But computer enhancements started taking off like wildfire. Every year memory requirements would skyrocket. By the late 1990's it would take about 256 meg of Ram to run high end networking operations. Many computers would need 64 meg just to load the operating theory itself. Memory requirements were out of control. The good news is that prices of memory dropped like lead weights. Today you can get 512 meg of Dram for about . No, that's not a misprint. Memory costs have come down so much that they are roughly inconsequential. However, memory requirements are still going straight through the roof. A typical home Pc better have at least 256 meg of Ram if it wants to just be able to crawl straight through start up, running your Internet association and a few applications at the same time. Having more than 8 windows open on an Xp theory with less than 256 meg is suicide.

So to sass the question, how much is enough. It's never enough and it won't ever be enough. Software enhancements will continue to send Pc memory requirements into orbit. So the best guidance anything can give you is to get as much memory as the Pc will physically hold when you get it.

If you're lucky, it will be good enough for a year.
